WASTE AND RECYCLING COLLECTIONS RETURN TO NORMAL

Waste and recycling collections in Tendring returned to normal today following the big freeze.

Tendring District Council’s (TDC) contractors Veolia were back out on the streets after four days of severe disruption.

There were no services on Thursday, Friday and Saturday last week due to the snow and ice - and only a limited service on Wednesday after three minor accidents in the Harwich and Manningtree areas.

However, bosses returned this morning to better conditions and crews were out in the vehicles from early morning.

Lynda McWilliams, TDC’s Cabinet Member for the Environment, thanked residents for their patience over the period when black bags and recycling boxes were not collected.

“All crews are now back out working and we are operating a normal timetable from today,” she said.

“Conditions underfoot are still very difficult and there is a great deal of extra waste to be collected.

“There are also issues where some roads may not be accessible to the vehicles and this could all slow down operations. However, the teams will get round as soon as they can.”

Cllr McWilliams added that all residents should put out their waste bags and recycling boxes on their normal collection day.

However, if residents have placed bags of refuse outside their homes already the Council asks them to do all they can to ensure they are secure and minimise the chances of them being pulled apart by birds or animals.

This only leads to further litter and rubbish problems on the streets to be dealt with.

“We are only too aware that it has been frustrating for people not to have had their waste collected for much of last week but things should pick up from today,” said Cllr McWilliams.

DISRUPTION TO WASTE COLLECTION SERVICE IN TENDRING

Residents across Tendring were today being warned to expect disruption to their waste collection and recycling service over the next few days.

Tendring District Council’s (TDC) contractors Veolia withdrew its vehicles from the Harwich and Mistley areas where they were due to collect this morning because of the severe weather conditions.

The decision was taken following three accidents involving staff and vehicles.

Crews have collected in the Clacton area and parts of Frinton and Walton where there is less of a problem - but will only be able to continue until the trucks are full.

With traffic gridlocked on parts of the A120 and A133 the vehicles are unable to get through to the tip at Stanway and recycling centre at Brightlingsea.

Lynda McWilliams, TDC’s Cabinet Member for the Environment, said Veolia teams had done a fantastic job around Christmas and the New Year and managed near normal collections.

“However, this time the weather has meant that that some collections will not be possible today and are likely to be disrupted while the snow and icy conditions continue,” she said.

“The message to all our residents is to continue to put their waste out inside their boundaries and the crews will get round to collect them as soon as possible.”

Cllr McWilliams said that bags and boxes should still be put out on the normal day for collection.

Due to Veolia staff being taken off some collection rounds today they have offered their services to the Council to help with gritting pavements.
